The visit of Dr. Tran Huu Phuc, Rector of the University of Foreign Language Studies – University of Danang (UFLS-UD), on June 22 marks an auspicious start for the future possible partnership with National Chengchi University (NCCU). Invited by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Dr. Tran Huu Phuc - along with his family – met with NCCU Executive Vice President Prof. Chun-Chig Chang and Vice President for International Cooperation Prof. Mei-Fen Chen and discussed future collaboration possibilities. A particular focus during the talk thereby represented the promotion of Vietnamese language and cultural studies in Taiwan.

Following this purpose, Rector Tran Huu Phuc proposed the idea of having UFLS-UD students majoring in teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language (VFL) come to NCCU and complete a student teaching internship. As a result, aspiring teachers would gain valuable and practical teaching experiences for their future in education. Simultaneously, NCCU students interested in Southeast Asia - and in Vietnam in particular - could thus benefit from an expansion of related courses.

In turn, students from NCCU’s Department of Chinese Literature and those enrolled in the Teaching Chinese as a Second Language program could do likewise by engaging in a teaching internship at UFLS-UD, an opportunity that could represent a culminating experience and assist in refining students’ skills and knowledge. NCCU Prof. Chi-Ping Lin from the Department of Chinese Literature and Prof. TranThi Hoang Phoung from the Foreign Language Center, who were also present at the meeting, both strongly praised the suggested mutually beneficial project.

NCCU currently has three partner universities in Vietnam, including the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University  in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi; the University of Economics and Business, Vietnam National University,  Hanoi. These three partners are either in the north or south of Vietnam. Therefore, UFLS-UD could serve as a geographic strategic partner in the middle of the country, where living expenses are significantly cheaper. This may be especially interesting for NCCU students from the newly founded degree program in Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures who plan to go abroad on exchange.

Future cooperation is not only envisaged among these specific departments, but would certainly also include student exchange and short-term programs. This first meeting between NCCU and UFLS-UD concluded on a promising note, as further talks on the collaboration details have been scheduled and the signing of a memorandum of understanding is to be expected, a step towards the expansion of collaboration with universities in Southeast Asia in accordance with Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy.
