In celebration of NCCU 90th anniversary, Professor Robert J. Shiller, the 2013 Nobel Prize Laureate in Economic Sciences, is invited to give a speech on July 12. Prof. Shiller is going to share his expertise under the topic of Connectivity Between Asset Price Inflation and the Financial Markets.

Echoing NCCU’s motto, “leadership of ideas, inspiration to society and global reach”, the lecture aims to connect Taiwan’s academia to the world. It is a great honor to have Prof. Shiller come to NCCU as this is his only lecture on campus during his stay. He will substantiate how investor mentality leads to inflation of asset price by reflecting on phenomena in Taiwan and his observations in US stock markets.

Prof. Shiller has received the Paul A. Samuelson Award in 1996, Deutsche Bank Award in 2000, Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2013 and so forth. Simultaneously, Prof. Shiller was ranked among the 100 most influential economists of the world by the Institution for Economic Research, IDEAS, Federal Reserve System of the USA. The best-seller by Prof. Shiller, Irrational Exuberance, analyzed people’s speculativeness and behaviour in the stock market, as well as precisely predicted the burst of Internet Bubbles in 2007. Afterwards, Prof. Shiller further forecasted the Subprime mortgage crisis in 2007, and thus was regarded as “the global economic prophet” by the Global Views Monthly.

On top of that, Prof. Shiller has never stopped implementing his ideas into daily life. The most classic one is “Cyclically Adjusted Price-Earnings Ratio (CAPE)”. Mediated by the inflation level, the index enables investors to estimate stock markets precisely. Another example proposed by Prof. Shiller is “Case-Shiller House Prices Indices”. This is to measure price alternation of ordinary houses for residential purposes in the USA.
