Pioneering Media Education: NCCU’s GCIT Program Partners with TaiwanPlus and Rti for Cross-Media Training

【Article by GCIT】

Students from the Master’s Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technologies (GCIT) at National Chengchi University recently presented their final media proposal projects, developed in collaboration with TaiwanPlus and Radio Taiwan International (Rti)—two of Taiwan’s leading media organizations. This milestone capped an intensive semester-long course, “Global Communication: Cross-Media Planning, Production, and Management,” designed to immerse students in the realities of global media production and digital storytelling.

This pioneering course marks the first-ever formal academic collaboration of a curriculum directly co-developed and co-taught by Rti and TaiwanPlus, brought directly into GCIT, setting a new benchmark for media education in Taiwan. Veteran Rti host Weimin Tseng and TaiwanPlus CEO Michael Yu jointly led the program, sharing invaluable industry insights and mentoring students through hands-on learning experiences that bridged theory and practice.

Structured in two distinct segments, the program provided students with a comprehensive understanding of Taiwan’s dynamic media landscape:

  • Rti Segment: Under the guidance of Carlson Huang, Manager of Rti’s International Language Division, and Vice President Isis Lee, students explored the enduring power of radio broadcasting in multilingual and multicultural contexts. They examined how traditional media formats are adapting to the digital age and social media platforms.
  • TaiwanPlus Segment: Students engaged with top digital news professionals shaping Taiwan’s international image. Workshops and lectures were led by Deputy News Director Andrew Ryan, Digital Media Analyst Patricia Cheung, Deputy Director of Social Oliver Hsu, Producer Allen Huang, Director of International Coverage Divya Gopalan, and host of “Taiwan Talks” Yin Khvat.

The course culminated in a final project requiring students to develop original content concepts tailored for social media platforms of their choice. From audience targeting and content strategy to scripting and interview planning, students demonstrated strong cross-platform production skills and creative thinking that impressed their mentors. As Michael Yu remarked, “They grew the whole garden when only a flower was asked.”

The impact of this course extended beyond academia as student Anh Vu Pham (Ryan) shared on LinkedIn: “Now I’m back in the world of communication with a new perspective. Being in the studio and learning how a current affairs show is built made me realize how all those past experiences actually connect.”

As the course concludes, GCIT extends sincere thanks to Rti and TaiwanPlus professionals for their invaluable mentorship. This successful collaboration lays a solid foundation for future partnerships, as GCIT continues to bridge academia and industry through innovative, hands-on learning experiences.
