Dissertation Awards Announced: NCCU Won Two First Prizes in History and Social Studies

In the aim to establish academic subjectivity in Chinese's humanity and culture studies and to prompt the benchmark position of Chinese language in academic world, 4th Shi-Yuen Doctoral Dissertation Prize on Humanity and Social Science  (思源人文社會科學博士論文獎) was held on August 28 . This year 17 doctors in total from Taiwan and mainland in varying sciences have won the prizes.
 
Throughout the award winning list, participants from Taiwan have won 3 first prizes and 5 merit prizes (優等); Two first prizes for history and social studies were won respectively by Jiahao Chen (陳家豪) from Graduate Institute of Taiwan History (臺灣歷史研究所) and Fanghua Chang (張芳華) from Graduate Institute of Development Studies (國家發展研究所) in National Chengchi University (NCCU); First prize for philosophy studies was won by Yi Chen (陳儀) from Dept. of Chinese Literature in National Central University (中央大學中文系).
 
Si-Yuen Pan (潘思源) expressed that, on one hand, by promoting this dissertation prize he wishes to encourage dissertations to be published by both students from Taiwan and mainland, especially dissertations focusing on humanity and social science in the hope of helping the development of humanity and social science community in Taiwan, mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. On the other hand, he himself wishes for an increased volume in publications and readers of dissertations would benefit on raising NCCU's ranking “in order to reciprocate NCCU’s education to me”. 
 
As per statistics by Chengchi University Press, throughout four the years of Shi-Yuen Doctoral Dissertation Prize (思源博士論文獎) starting from 2011, 60 young doctors have been awarded, including 13 first prizes and 17 merit prizes from Taiwan, and 11 first prizes and 19 merit prizes from mainland China. Academic achievements by the young generation are well matched in strength from both coasts.
