2nd Zhongni Prize goes to Chair Prof. Chen Fangming for His Enlightening Society

After rigorous procedures, the 2nd Zhongni Prize in 2017 was won by Chair Professor Chen Fang-ming (陳芳明) from the Graduate Institute of Taiwanese Literature. By combining reading, writing, research and instruction, Chair Prof Chen not only transmits knowledge, provides for study  and
dispels confusion during the class, but achieves widespread impact outside the campus and influence contemporary intellectuals. The 2nd Zhongni Prize will be held at the Sun Moon Auditorium, on the 2nd floor of the Art and Culture Center in NCCU on November 30, 2017 at 3:30 pm.. Chair Prof. Chen will give the acceptance speech. Teachers and students are kindly welcome to the ceremony.

In order to enhance teaching quality, many rewards are provided to encourage outstanding teachers. In 2016, Zhongni Prize was set by President Edward Chow and Prof. Lee Swee-huat (李瑞華), who sponsored NCCU 10 million NTD.This 10-year term Prize distributes one million dollars each year to a distinguished full-time professor in NCCU ( 500,000 NTD for personal bonus / 500,000 NTD for promotion award-winning teaching funding).
 

Inheriting the spirit of the first year, The 2nd Zhongni Prize returns to the essence of teaching, hoping that NCCU can not only provide knowledge, but become a top-notch university in pursuing and practicing holistic education. The prize encourages teachers to combine the life experience and values with their teaching and to cultivate students’ independent thinking ability.  After the recommendation and application period  from May 12th to June 22nd, candidates had been carefully evaluated and re-evaluated and Chair Professor Chen Fangming from the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature stood out. The selecting committee unanimously agreed that Professor Chen's lectures along with the books he composed are rich in profound cultural background. Furthermore, the committee recognized his long-term active integration of reading, writing, research and teaching, which links the past, the present, and the future and cultivates students' ability of independent speculation and cultural introspection. Most notably, Chair Prof. Chen recorded every lecture he teaches into books, which spread his influence of transmitting wisdom, providing knowledge, and dispelling confusion outside the campus and benefits more people. Besides, Chair Prof. Chen engages in dialogue with contemporary intellectuals to promote Taiwanese literature and Taiwan's history through divergent ways, such as works, columns, social media, lectures and open-ended courses, hoping to expand Taiwan's research horizons, discover diverse issues, reflect contemporary social values ​​and make a great influence on the society.
 

Chen Fang-ming, Chair Professor, who constantly pursues and practices holistic education, and spares no effort to inspire next generation, is a role-model in education field. The 2nd Zhongni Prize will be held at Sun Moon Auditorium, 2nd floor of the Art and Culture Center of NCCU, on November 30th 2017 at 3:30 pm. Teachers and students are welcome to attend the ceremony. Afterwards, Chair Prof. Chen will promote “Teaching Quality Improvement Program”  with the College together. Moreover, Center of Teaching and Learning Development will hold Zhongni Prize Semina in the hope of recognizing the contribution and achievements of outstanding teachers through Zhongni Prize. Sharing and promoting teaching ideas and experiences, NCCU hopes to emphasize the teaching and promote the spirit of holistic education as well, which in turn leads to the improvement of higher education for the benefit of the students and to the importance on the teaching profession and teaching career in the society.

 

2016 1st Zhongni Prize went to Seetoo Dah-hsian(司徒達賢), professor of Department of Business Administration. To  inherit his teaching excellence and experience on campus, NCCU holds seminars and teaching programs with Professor Seetoo. The programs include a series of instructor training lectures on TA and PhD students, case study teaching method and so forth. Apart from fostering students' ability of critical thinking and problem solving, the programs also puts much emphasis on students and stresses effective learning, so as to infill education with new vigor and vitality.
